As 2016 has drawn to a close, tech industry insiders increasingly have been wondering if the "sharing economy" has hit its peak. Has the market become saturated with new start-ups and apps? What is the future of companies operating in this space?

The Adam Smith Society's second event in the Smith Soc Treks series was held from November 17-19, 2016 in Boca Raton, Florida. This Trek's focus was the historical and philosophical debate of "Capitalism vs. Socialism" and discussion was driven by our reader, What Adam Smith Knew: Moral Lessons on Capitalism from Its Greatest Champions and Fiercest Opponents.

Our chapter at the MIT Sloan School of Management welcomed two speakers to a salon dinner on November 14.

Partially lost in the glare of last week's election results was the successful performance of a number of marijuana-related ballot initiatives.

On November 1, the Smith Soc Chapter at Duke University Fuqua School of Business staged a debate on multiple economic and political policy issues. The chapter tapped two on-campus experts, Dr. Adriano Rampini, a Professor of Finance and Economics, and Dr. Aaron Chatterji, an Associate Professor of Strategy.

Senator Tom Coburn was on the road for Smith Soc in late October, a guest of our Chapter at Dartmouth College’s Tuck School of Business and visiting with our affiliated students at Harvard Business School. In addition to being an advisor to the Manhattan Institute's Project FDA, the former Congressman and Senator from Oklahoma is also a successful businessman and medical doctor.

There seems to be no escaping debates at the moment. While the just-concluded Presidential Debates have been on the mind of most Americans during the month of October, Smith Soc chapters have taken the debate format and used it to highlight issues and discussions that matter to free market-minded business school students. Multiple chapters have taken on issues as wide-ranging as the relationship between the market and government, the viability of a carbon tax, and the implications of the Brexit vote.

The Adam Smith Society partnered with Inteilligence Squared US to bring another IQ2US debate to life - this one at NYU's Skirball Center on October 13, 2016. The topic up for debate was 'Blame Big Pharma for Out of Control Health Care Costs'.

The Adam Smith Society opened its Smith Soc Treks series over the Columbus Day holiday weekend in Los Cabos, Mexico. The Treks, a biannual series of weekend-long destination-based seminars, are designed to connect Smith Soc student and professional members with experts and leaders in a particular field of study or policy area.
