Governing India and the Markets
The University of Michigan Ross School of Business Adam Smith Society Chapter and the Ross' Indian Subcontinent Business Association are hosting Dr. Aneel Karnani on February 8th, when he delivers a lecture on the governing challenges and opportunities that have emerged in India since the 1991 economic liberalization reforms. A question and answer session will follow the lecture.
The reforms begun in 1991 by Prime Minister Narasimha Rao and Finance Minister Manmohan Singh saw massive regulatory reform, privatization and pro-globalization policies. The cumulative effects of these reforms has been a near-doubling of average annual GDP growth, massive reductions in poverty and significant growth in service and information technology industries. These positive trends have been tempered by problems with federal and state governments in managing growth, professionalization and perverse incentives by corporations, NGOs and other actors.
