Understanding both the ideas and the stories behind free markets.

From Adam Smith and Alexander Hamilton, to F.A. Hayek and Milton Friedman, to the leading scholars of today…Smith Soc members are focused on both classical and modern ideas about economics and liberty.

The Adam Smith Society is devoted to promoting and discussing the foundational texts of classical economics, powerful new ideas in modern ecnomics, and the history behind both classical and modern economics, American business, and American political institutions. We are committed to to presenting these ideas and the stoires behind them to our student and professional members through a variety of programs.

Our commitment begins with our reader, What Adam Smith Knew, edited by James Otteson of Wake Forest University, which presents a collection of classic and modern texts from capitalism's advocates and critics. We host events that encoruage the exploration of foundational texts, most recently a Smith Soc Trek in partnership with the Liberty Fund. We also bring in speakers who have expertise in history, philosophy, and economics, and can illuminate capitalism's evolution. A recent event brought Ray Fisman and Tim Sullivan to MIT to discuss their book, The Inner Lives of Markets, which describes the continuing power of economics to describe and shape what is happening across the business world.
