Smith Soc's multi-chapter case competition ("Case Comp") provides student chapters with the opportunity to compete against one other to devise a potential business solution to an issue with ethical, political, and philosophical implications. Case Comp 2020 was in Los Angeles, California! The 2020 focused on the challenges that international firms, such as Apple, face in regard to tariffs and trade tensions among the United States, China, and Europe. Nine student chapter teams from across the country met to present on Apple and U.S.-China trade relations—particularly with respect to supply chain and 5G implications. An expert panel of four judges analyzed the team presentations on the case, which was authored by BYU economics professor Paul Godfrey. Historian, Asia expert, and Hoover Institution fellow Michael Auslin delivered a keynote address on the intricate nature of the U.S.-China relationship and free trade.
